This is a truly thorough and comprehensive book with thoughtful ideas that are clear and incredibly helpful. I have bought several copies to give to everyone I know with children in high school.
Easy read with great, quick tips for writing. Particularly found the thought building process tips helpful, as well as the sample types of both good and bad essays. Makes me wish I was back in high school...almost...well, it makes me wish I had this book when I was in high school. Look forward to sharing with my kids for use next school year.
I kind of think this book should be part of every high school’s course material. The skills and concepts in here add up to a framework for gaining understanding and organizing thought. My kid’s attitude toward essay assignments has noticeably improved since going through this book because that framework is orienting, the goals are clearer to him, and his grades have improved. XD. Really glad we made this purchase!
Proponents of the Liberal Arts education say that it teaches you how to think, and that the material that you study is relatively immaterial. This book takes the same approach to writing. In clear, concise prose, Liebman gives you the tools needed to write as efficiently and clearly as he. The things I learned from this book altered my approach to writing forever. This book will leave you with the mental framework needed to write any essay. In short, Liebman will make you a better, more coherent writer, in a manner that you can take with you for the rest of your life.
This is an excellent resource for high school students as well as for their parents who might be at a loss as to how to support their children's writing. Liebman's prose is clear, instructive, and he gives extremely helpful examples. This should be required reading in every 9th grade humanities class!

A savvy 8th grade student would benefit from reading it as well — perhaps during the summer before his or her high school career begins. While the author's focus is on analytical writing, the process described could be easily adapted for personal and creative writing as well.
